(20 Apr 2017) LEADIN: The president of Emirates says the airline remains committed to the US market despite plans to slash 20 percent of its flights. The decision follows tougher security and visa measures put in place under the Trump administration STORYLINE: The Middle East's largest airline is clipping its wings with regard to some flights into the United States. Emirates has announced it will cut 20 percent of its current flights to US cities. But the President of Emirates, Tim Clark says the airline has no intention of pulling out of the US market. "This is what I consider to be a temporary situation, I do not see this to be a paradigm shift in what we're doing with regards to the markets into the United States or out of the United States." Emirates said Wednesday it was cutting flights to five US cities and blamed the move on stiffer US security measures and attempts to ban travellers from some Muslim-majority nations since President Donald Trump took office. Dubai was one of 10 cities in Muslim-majority countries affected by a ban on laptops and other personal electronics in carry-on luggage aboard US-bound flights. The UAE carrier recently announced it will loan tablets and laptops to business and first class passengers flying to the United States. Clark says the airline has worked to mitigate the inconvenience caused to passengers by the ban. However he says the Trump administration made a decision based on what they perceived as a clear and present threat, and that Emirates will comply with the new rules. Clark declined to detail how much of a financial hit Emirates has taken over the past three months, but he described the reduction in passenger demand as "significant". The cuts will reduce the number of US-bound flights from Dubai to 101, down from 126 currently. Twice daily Emirates flights to Boston, Los Angles and Seattle will be reduced to once a day. Daily flights to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando will be pared down to five per week. Like its smaller Gulf rivals Qatar Airways and Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, Emirates has ramped up its US presence in recent years and recently launched a new service to Newark via Athens. Several big US carriers have bristled at the Gulf airlines' US push, accusing them of flooding the market with capacity while receiving billions of dollars of unfair government subsidies. The Gulf airlines deny the allegations. "Well they would say that wouldn't they? And we've had two and a half years of this, and as we have grown our capacity, successfully introduced more cities successfully, and grown our profits successfully this constant tirade comes at us, and we're getting used to it now," says Clark. US airline executives made a personal pitch to Trump earlier this year to restrict Gulf carriers' access after failing to persuade the Obama administration to curb their expansion. Clark made a point to take a jab at United Airlines, which is part of a campaign opposing more US routes for Gulf carriers, over its handling of an overbooked passenger hauled from a flight. "And the United disgraceful episode was a classic case of how corporate culture has a, indicates that that particular company has lost the plot with regards to what it should be doing, basically the right thing, by their passengers," he says. The latest travel ban by the US suspended new visas for people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, and froze the nation's refugee program. Like an earlier ban that also included Iraqi citizens, it has been blocked from taking effect by the courts. (3 Jan 2017) The decorative clock bearing the name of America's incoming 45th president has yet to start at the Trump International Golf Club in Dubai, but the developers behind the project already are counting the money they've made. The 18-hole course is likely to be the first Trump-connected property to open after his 20 January inauguration as president, joining his organisation's projects stretching from Bali to Brazil. It also encapsulates the host of worries of possible conflicts of interest circulating around a president who is very different from America's past leaders. While the Oval Office has always been home to the wealthy, Donald Trump represents the first franchise president. Could foreign governments pressure or please Trump through his international businesses? Should projects bearing his name receive additional security? And how close should his ties remain to business executives operating in areas with far different opinions about human rights and justice? "President-elect Trump has blurred the line between his public service role as the president-elect, what his transition team is doing and what his business operations are", said Scott Amey, General Counsel at the Project on Government Oversight. "That will only continue if he also has his children that operate in his administration and other children that are operating the businesses." The Trump International Golf Club in Dubai - the sheikhdom in the United Arab Emirates home to a futuristic skyline crowned by the world's tallest building - is due to open in February and be managed by Trump Organisation employees. The course sits along a road that begins near the sail-shaped Burj al-Arab luxury hotel and passes by a mall with its own artificial ski slope. The luxury continues onto the par-71 Trump course, designed by American golf architect Gil Hanse, where wrinkled fairways lead to putting greens made smooth with silica sand brushed in between micro-blades of grass. It is set inside Akoya, a massive housing development of 2,600 villas and 7,000 apartments developed by Dubai-based luxury real estate DAMAC Properties. Another Trump-managed golf course is planned for another even larger DAMAC project under development further down the road. Billionaire Hussain Sajwani, who founded DAMAC Properties in 2002, met Trump some 10 years ago and the two men had hit it off over their real estate experiences, said Niall McLoughlin, a senior vice president for communications and marketing at the firm. Trump received between 1 million US dollars (USD) to 5 million USD from DAMAC, according to a Federal Election Committee report submitted in May. It's unclear how much the contract will be worth once the golf course opens and starts operating. McLoughlin declined to offer specific figures. It is the first Trump venture in the Arab world. His first proposed project in Dubai, a 62-story tower with state-backed developer Nakheel, became a victim of the sheikhdom's 2009 financial crisis. By 2014, Trump knocked a golf ball down the fairway of what would become the golf course at Akoya. Sajwani called Trump a "great man" during the tour, and DAMAC later designed some 100 Trump-branded villas at the property, selling from 5 million dirhams (1.3 million USD) to over 15 million dirhams (4 million USD). With Trump set to be sworn in as president, security analysts have suggested properties bearing his name could be targets. His campaign pledge calling for a "total and complete shutdown" of Muslims entering the US, followed by his proposal to conduct "extreme vetting" of immigrants, also sparked regional anger. The Trump logos on the golf course even came down for a short time. Financial matters raise other questions.
